20th Anniversary of JOCV in Belize - Ex-JOCV Now: Ms. Yumi Guild

Ms. Yumi Guild

Ms. Yumi Guild shares her experiences and thoughts on Belize. Ms. Yumi Guild was assigned at St.John Vianney RC School & St.Martin De Porres School as a volunteer in music between July 2004 to July 2006. As a volunteer in music she taught music in Catholic schools, created a music textbook and also gave music lectures to Belizean teachers during the summer. She was also very active in sharing Japanese culture by teaching and demonstrating Japanese traditional dance called "So-ran Bushi". She wrote, and we quote:

"I had never heard of BELIZE when I applied for JOCV Program. When I arrived in Belize, I was firstly impressed by the people's warm welcome, big hugs and beautiful smiles. Since I could neither understand nor speak Creole language, I sometimes had difficulties in communicating with people. There were also many things that confused me due to cultural differences between Belize and Japan. Despite these difficulties, I was encouraged by cheerfulness and kindness of Belizean People.

My two year experience as a volunteer in music enabled me to deepen my knowledge and to improve skills in my field of expertise. Working with local teachers at local schools gave me the opportunity to think about what I want to aim for in the future, what I can do through music, and what Belize needs. Based on these experiences and thoughts, I gained confidence in my future possibilities. At present I live in Belize and work as a music teacher, contributing not only to the development of music education, but also in the development of young musicians and music teachers.

Music and Art enriches our life. So let's share the joy with each other! I love the people of Belize, its nature and music. This is why I came back to this country after my volunteer assignment was completed. Belize changed my life and I have no regrets. I am leading a beautiful life with my family in this country. Thank you Belize!!"
