Long term Participants Graduates

2023.09.08

My name is Bokani Nthaba, I recently completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Degree (Geophysics) from Kyushu University, Japan. I was the fourth recipient of the JICA Botswana long term scholarship: ‘Human Resources Development in the Mining Sector (KIZUNA Program)’. My doctoral thesis focused on the use of surface wave dispersion data to construct high-resolution 3D S-wave velocity and azimuthal anisotropy models based on ambient noise tomography (ANT). These kinds of models contribute towards understanding the locations and features of seismicity regions. Most importantly, they contribute towards understanding the complex shallow crustal structure, earthquake faulting, the dominant deformation mechanisms in the tectonically active areas, and are useful for hazard assessment and disaster mitigation.

I have previously served as a teaching and research assistant at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), and that, along with the graduate training I received provided me with broader skills necessary for teaching at university level and assisting tertiary students develop critical thinking skills.

In addition, I used this opportunity to learn and appreciate the Japanese culture. My personal observations and interactions with the Japanese people are that they are meticulous at work, very august and strive for total professionalism in everything they do, and value efficacy and determination. These are disciplined people who work with minimal supervision and always try to go the extra mile to achieve their objectives, very affable and open to new ideas. I have adopted this kind of lifestyle and would like to instil the same attitude to my fellow countrymen now that I am back home.
