SHEP Making strides in North East District
2023.04.07
JICA Botswana Office recently visited the North-East District (Botswana) where the Ministry of Agriculture (District Agriculture Coordinating Office) is implementing Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment Promotion (SHEP) pilot project. This was initiated by ex-participants of the Knowledge Co-Creation Training Program (KCCP) in Market-Oriented Agriculture Promotion (Planning and Management) that was organised by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
As part of the training, KCCP participants have to formulate an action plan or a solution based approach to address issues in their home countries. Therefore, post their training, they begin to implement their action plans as a way of sharing knowledge and skills acquired from the training. In implementing their action plans, the three participants first shared the knowledge and lessons from the training with their colleagues, departments and Ministry and was then followed by a workshop to train local farmers in their areas about SHEP. Farmers who took part in the workshop were from Matenge-Gulubane Cluster and Ditladi Cluster (North-East District).
JICA congratulated the ex-participants for the successful implementation of their action plan as evidenced by the farmers who have adopted the SHEP approach program and are eager to learn more, work together in order to reap the benefits of the program. The farmers showed a lot of enthusiasm and determination to utilise the "Grow to Sell" approach.
