Greeting to honorable readers
The JICA Georgia Office was established in May 2017 in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, as a base overseeing the South Caucasus region, which includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
In 2018, the Japanese government launched the "Caucasus Initiative," comprising two pillars: support for human resource development responsible for "nation-building," and assistance to create an "attractive Caucasus" through infrastructure development and improvements in the business environment. JICA has been actively engaged in various forms of cooperation aligned with this initiative, including enhancing transportation infrastructure in Georgia, increasing power generation in Azerbaijan, and strengthening disaster prevention capabilities in Armenia.
In 2022, Japan and the three Caucasus countries celebrated the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and new initiatives have begun, such as fostering industries through the utilization of ICT and support for startups. Furthermore, the JICA Volunteer Program is implemented in Georgia, where volunteers engage in grassroots activities, serving as a bridge between the two countries.
The region boasts a magnificent natural environment, rich historical architecture, intangible cultural heritage such as traditional dances and choral music, and an abundance of tourism resources, including appealing wine and cuisine, drawing attention as a global tourist destination. Our staff is dedicated to contributing to the social and economic development of the South Caucasus and Japan, through mutual cooperation while respecting each other's history and culture.
August 2024
