JICA celebrates as India commemorates 77th Independence Day

New Delhi, August 12, 2023: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) congratulates India on completing 76 years of its Independence. JICA India proudly commemorates its longstanding commitment to fostering inclusive development and contributing to India's progress. As the nation leads the G20 Summit in 2023, JICA looks forward to fortifying bilateral cooperation, working in league to address global challenges, and build a peaceful, stable, and prosperous international community.

JICA's collaboration with India takes diverse forms, including technical cooperation, loan provisions, grant finance provisions, and other avenues. Through this comprehensive approach, numerous developments are fostering across critical sectors such as transport, water, sanitation, energy, forestry, agriculture, health, and education. JICA reiterates its commitment to continuing support to India for further building a prosperous future for both nations and the global society.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. SAITO Mitsunori, Chief Representative, JICA India Office said, “As one of the world’s largest democracies, India has made a place for itself on the global map. Japan stands with the country as a trusted partner in its journey towards a sustainable and stable future. I would like to reiterate JICA's unwavering commitment to supporting India in its journey towards achieving socio-economic development. This is a crucial year for both Japan and India, as the nations have respectively assumed the G7 and G20 presidencies in 2023 and have been working together for various sectors in the international community. This presents a great opportunity to further strengthen and promote our already successful bilateral cooperation. Consequently, it is an ideal time to work together in multilateral frameworks on areas such as circular economy and resource efficiency, low carbon technology, green hydrogen among others. My heartfelt congratulations to India on its 77^th Independence Day.”

In FY 2022-23, JICA India achieved a historic milestone by recording its largest loan signing amount of 567,487 million JPY proving to be a testament to its commitment to India's advancement This is for the Patna Metro Rail Construction Project (I), The Project for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation for Climate Change Response in West Bengal, Rajasthan Water Sector Livelihood Improvement Project (II), and Project for the Construction of Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (IV),. Building on the success of the previous fiscal year, JICA is poised to complete several significant ongoing projects in FY 2023-24. These include the INR 1,927 crore ODA loan extended to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project (III) in Maharashtra, the NH208 Kailashahar-Khowai road under Northeast Connectivity Improvement Project in Tripura, the Tamil Nadu Urban Health Improvement Project, Project for Development of Intelligent Transport System in Bengaluru, and the Bihar National Highway Improvement Project. Education remains a key area of contribution, with various initiatives s at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) that are nearing completion.

As India celebrates its 77^th Independence Day, JICA continues to pioneer inclusive development amidst global challenges and remains committed to fostering enduring partnerships and driving sustainable progress for India and the world.

Established by law, as an incorporated administrative institution under the Government of Japan, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) aims to contribute to the promotion of international cooperation, as the sole Japanese governmental agency in charge of ODA implementation. JICA is the world's largest bilateral donor agency and works as a bridge between Japan and emerging countries, providing assistance in the form of loans, grants, and technical cooperation, to enable the emerging countries to strengthen their capabilities.
