2026.03.08

On March 8, 2026, an inauguration ceremony was held for newly completed sections of the Delhi Mass Rapid Transport System Project (Phase 4), supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through its ODA loan. With the opening, a 12.3 km section of Line 7 (Pink Line) between Majlis Park and Maujpur–Babarpur, and a 9.9 km section of Line 8 (Magenta Line) between Majlis Park and Deepali Chawk commenced operation.

The ceremony was attended on the Indian side by H.E. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and Ms. Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, among other dignitaries. From the Japanese side, the attendees included Mr. ARIYOSHI, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in India, and Mr. TAKEUCHI Takuro, Chief Representative of the JICA India Office.

Through this project, JICA hopes to meet increasing transportation demand in the Delhi metropolitan area, relieve traffic congestion, reduce vehicle-related pollution, and contribute to regional economic development and improvements in the urban environment. Ultimately, the project is also anticipated to support broader efforts toward climate change mitigation.

Japan has been the partner of Delhi Metro since its beginning. The Delhi Metro project has promoted important changes in society, such as ladies’ coach and safety protocols in construction works.

So far, JICA has supported construction of about 371km out of total network of 463km with ODA loan amounting to more than one lakh crore yen (approximately 582 billion rupees).

JICA remains committed to continuing its cooperation in the fields of urban railways and transportation in India.
