(Press Release) TCTP Empowering Asia’s Future in Green Technology: Advanced Materials Training Program Begins in Malaysia

JICA Malaysia Office in collaboration with the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia will host a Third-Country Training Program (*1) titled “Advanced Material Characterization for Green Technology Application” for Asian Countries to be held from September 28 to 9 October 2026. The purpose of the program is to strengthen institutional capacity in sustainability-focused research and technical innovation and enhance the region’s scientific readiness to address environmental and energy challenges as well as fostering regional collaboration through knowledge sharing on equipment operations and troubleshooting, ultimately promoting cross-border research excellence.

While many efforts are being made to strengthen the institutional capacity, significant challenges persist at the operational level in handling high-end equipment. In many emerging economies, including Malaysia, there is a notable shortage of personnel equipped with the specialized knowledge and technical proficiency necessary to conduct scientific assessments, analyze complex data, and support the implementation of environmentally sustainable technologies. This capacity gap adversely affects the quality and accuracy of evaluations in green-related initiatives and limits the ability to make informed, evidence-based policy and industrial decisions.

To address these challenges, this Third-Country Training Program will be conducted by MJIIT (*2), to provide essential knowledge and skills in utilizing analytical and microscopy equipment such as FTIR, GCMS, LVSEM & FESEM. These experiences will then enhance the skills of trainees to effectively utilize green technology-related high-end equipment.

In this training, MJIIT will host a number of twelve (12) trainees from 5 Asian Countries namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Philippines, and Sri Lanka, to jointly experience the utilization of high-end equipment for green technology application.

*1 “Third-Country Training Program (TCTP)”: A type of technical cooperation in which JICA provides financial and technical support for training programs in which one developing country hosts trainees from another developing country. The main objective of TCTP is to share the experiences of Japan and Malaysia in specific fields and to strengthen the trainees’ ability to address various challenges in their home countries. In this region, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been implementing the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Program (MTCP) since 1980, and since 1992, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and JICA have been jointly conducting TCTPs.

*2 The Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) is a premier Malaysia-Japan hub for education, research and development, technical collaboration and mobility, serving ASEAN and the global community, Malaysia-Japan Linkages (MJL) is a sustainable and dynamic platform in MJIIT that catalyzes strategic collaboration among universities, industries, and agencies.

6) Training Content

This training program is organized by MJIIT, the training provider, to share the experiences and best practices of Malaysia on high-end analytical equipment utilization and mastering:

(i) The science behind green technology materials

(ii) Analytical Laboratory Practical Session: Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) & Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GCMS)

(iii) Microscopy Laboratory Practical Session: Low Vacuum Scanning Electron Microscopy (LVSEM) & Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM)

(iv) Maintenance & Safety of Handling Equipment including routine calibration, troubleshooting, and laboratory safety protocols
