JICA’s cooperation to RMI started in 1987, a year after its independence, by the acceptance of RMI official to training programs in Japan. Then from 1991 the dispatch of Japan overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCVs) started and nearly 300 volunteers has worked together with Marshallese.
In addition, JICA as an implementation agency of Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) has supported the development of RMI through various technical cooperation, both bilateral and regional, and Grant Aid cooperation in such fields as health, environment, education, fisheries, energy, social infrastructure, and other sectors in line with RMI’s development priorities.
Unfortunately, the strict border control during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic made us difficult to dispatch personnel from Japan, thus temporary halt or delay of our cooperation occurred. But now we are expediting to recover our cooperation to RMI.
In July, 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) was held in Japan and a Joint Action Plan based on the seven priority areas of cooperation in line with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent (2050 Strategy) was endorsed by the Leaders.
The JICA Marshall Islands Office will make our best effort for implementing the effective cooperation to RMI for the sustainable future of the people of this small but very beautiful island country as well as strengthening the relationship between RMI and Japan.
