The future of science and mathematics education -Lecturer keen to enhance Primary Education after training in Japan-
2023.12.27
Despite being jetlagged, Mr. Tom Peter, with utmost determination, conducted a brief presentation of his Action Plan just hours after his arrival from Japan last week. He is the Acting Head of Mathematics & Science Department at the Dauli College of Higher Education in Hela Province.
He attended the training on Quality Improvement of Primary Science Education – “Teaching and Learning” at On-Site Education. During his 7-week training, he was able to observe how science lessons were taught in different education institutions.
He mentioned that there was a dire need to improve the leaching and learning skills towards science education within Hela province. The underlying reasons included: the current mode of teaching (more theory than experiments); ineffective use of teaching materials; teachers’ confidence in conducting certain science experiments and underlying internal issues.
He has proposed to implement his Action Plan in two pilot project schools: Dauli Primary (Hela) & Lombi Primary (Southern Highlands). He believes that his plan to implement Science-oriented classrooms is feasible and can be achieved within 5 years.
