Workshop for Japanese-style math classes lesson using national math textbooks.

2024.02.05

On 24th January, a workshop on learning Japanese-style mathematics teaching methods by JICA volunteers was held at Sogeri Primary School in Hiri-Koiari District, Central Province.

Around 30 local teachers participated in the workshop aiming at improving their teaching methods. Mr. Todaka Masa, a JICA volunteer, conveyed the importance of conducting lessons using the national textbook in mathematics to the participants. He provided them with hands-on experience in Japanese-style mathematics teaching methods and introduced effective instructional methods utilizing the textbook.

Mr. Todaka introduced teaching methods using "plastic bottles caps" to make it easier for children to understand the concept of numbers (composition and decomposition of 10) and methods to enhance children's motivation. Participants experienced the difference between their previous teaching methods and the Japanese-style teaching methods during the workshop.

In mathematics lessons, many children often use their fingers or draw lines on paper for calculations. Mr. Todaka mentioned, "By helping children understand the concept of numbers, they will be able to calculate mentally, and their math performance is likely to improve." Primary school teachers who participated in the workshop expressed their interest in implementing mathematics lessons using plastic bottle caps.

Mr. Todaka’s training on Japanese-style math classes will continue.
