Sogeri Primary School students were graced by the visitation of Mr. Will Genia, a professional rugby player currently playing in Japan.

Mr. Genia had gone “Pro” at an early age of 18 and who has spent 20 years in the career of representing various clubs on the world stage before joining Hanazono Kintetsu Liners in Osaka, Japan, in 2019.

This visit was realized by the kind cooperation of Mr. Genia as well as his team, Hanazono Kintetsu Liners, based on the request of JICA PNG Office and JICA volunteers working at Sogeri Primary School.

Mr. and Mrs. Genia were invited by the JICA PNG office to visit the school on Wednesday 28th August 2024, to observe the teaching of JICA volunteers as well as to positively motivate and inspire the students to dream big and aim high, pursue greater goals that extend even outside of PNG boarders!

Like the majority of Papua New Guineans, the students are also avid rugby followers, and the extremely excited students listened attentively to Mr. Genia who spoke of his life’s journey playing rugby as a pro. Twenty four rugby balls were also presented to the school by JICA PNG office. The visit ended well when finally the students witnessed Mr. Genia’s high field goals and spiral kicks displayed for them.

A student representative thanked Mr. Genia and JICA for the visit including the donation of the rugby balls and stated that this visitation will further boost the motivation of some students who would also like to take the career pathway like Mr. Genia.

JICA continues to seek such unique collaborations to compliment the foundations of academic interventions through the work of its volunteers throughout PNG.
