TCP For Atari Irrigation Scheme Development Commences

In 2018, JICA undertook to support the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries

(M AAIF) in implementation of the Grant Aid Project for the establishment of Irrigation Systems in Atari Basin Area. The Project which commences late this year seeks to ensure the provision of stable supply of irrigation water for increased production and productivity of rice in the target communities of Kween and Bulambuli districts, in Eastern Uganda.

To complement the Grant Aid Project, it was further agreed between MAAIF and JICA that a Technical Cooperation Project (TCP) be implemented to ensure sustainable utilization and management of the developed scheme while also building technical capacity for rice production in Atari Basin Area.

The TCP on Sustainable Utilization, Operation and Management of Irrigation Systems in Atari Basin Area officially commenced on 1st April 2021. The 4-year Project will seek to ensure that;

1 . Techniques for farm management on irrigated rice cultivation are acquired by farmers
2 . Management capacity of Atari Irrigation Water Users' Association (IWUA) is developed, and
3 . Capacity of Government Officers to support and coordinate Atari IWUA is strengthened. Three (3) Japanese Experts (Kobayashi Kenichiro, Shiraishi Kenji and Shitomi Daiki) were dispatched to Uganda to work with MAAIF in the implementation of the Project.

A familiarization visit to the Atari area was conducted between19th and 22nd May during which the Project was officially introduced to the District Local Governments of Bulambuli and Kween as well as the Local community of Atari Area, represented by the IWUA Founders' Committee (FC) members.
