2021.09.13
With JICA's support, UNHabitat partnered with KCCA, Marula Proteen, Eco-plastile Limited and ACTogether, an organization affiliated with Slum Dwellers International on 13/9/2021 in a Clean-up campaign.
The campaign under the theme ‘Harnessing civic engagement and entrepreneurship of youth for safe disposal of solid waste and mitigating socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 in Kinawataka and Namuwongo informal Settlements in Kampala, Uganda', involved cleaning up Kansanvu community in Namuwongo, a suburb in Kampala, and sensitizing community members on waste management, dangers of indiscriminate disposal of waste and opportunities from waste.
For instance; Community members are able to collect waste, sort it at household level and trade it to Ecoplastile Limited for points that can be used for medical insurance or cash to buy other household needs. Out of solid waste, they are also able to make briquettes used for cooking, hence the slogan, ‘waste is wealth'.
Ms. Josephine Nasaazi, Minister, Public Health &
ducation also joined the waste collectors
at the site.
