JICA PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO THE INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED IN JAMAICA
The partnership between JICA and the Jamaica Association on Intellectual Disabilities (JAID) began in 1994 with the dispatch of the first JICA Volunteer. Over 20 volunteers have been dispatched to JAID in the areas of carpentry, woodcraft, handicraft, arts and craft, physical education and special education. This partnership has also allowed for capacity building and skills transfer to counterparts and JAID staff with the development of training manuals, best practices methods and technical expertise in the different areas of Special Education.
In recent years, six (6) volunteers were dispatched to JAID in the areas of Special Education, P.E. and handicraft.
Short Term Volunteer – Handicraft Instructor, working with crafter at the JAID Adult Centre in the Chuspe Studio.
These Volunteers provide support and invigorate person with disability to make them productive members of society. The activities include building relations between the community and school and assisting to establish the adult program at JAID.
Other activities include workshops for teachers and instructors (assisted by Volunteers attached to Jamaica 4-H Clubs), undertaking a needs survey of outlets to sell goods produced at the JAID Adult Centre (Chupse Studio), a one year training/ apprenticeship program for JAID students at the UCC Coffee Factory, Coffee beans accessory making and sales, Workshops of Art & Craft and gymnastic competitions.
