Symbolic Statistics for JICA Operation in Kenya

1. Objective

JICA Kenya Office compiled some of symbolic figures indicating our contribution to the people of Kenya. We hope these figures will provide intuitive understanding on how much we contribute.

2. Calculation Method

A) Ratio of Highway Adopted JICA Maintenance Method

  • We divided the length of highways using Performance Based Contract, which was introduced by the Project for Strengthening Capacity on Road Maintenance Management through Contracting (Phase 1 -3), on FY2018/19 by total road length under Kenya National Highways Authority.

B) Analysis of JICA contribution to the of Reduction of Custom Clearance Time

  • We analyzed the clearance time taken between border crossing at Namanga (Border between Kenya and Tanzania) in 2014 (before operationalization of One Stop Border Post (OSBP)) and the clearance time taken in 2019 (after operationalization of OSBP at Namanga) as part of "The Project for Enhancement of Trade Facilitation and Border Management Capacity in East Africa" supported by JICA.

C) Ratio of JICA contribution to the Geothermal Energy Produced

  • We divided the energy production capacity by Olkaria Unit 4-5 and Olkaria V, which was financed by JICA, from total Geothermal energy production capacity in MW.

D) Ratio of JICA contribution to the Port Container Cargo Traffic

  • We divided the Cargo Traffic of Mombasa Port Berth 20 and 21, which was financed by JICA, from Cargo Traffic for the Entire Port for 2019.

E) Increase of Farmer's Income

  • Average net income of individual farmer in the 19 sub-counties in 18 counties supported by the JICA Project SHEP Plus during the period of 2015-2020 was confirmed.

F) Population with access to clean water

  • Counted the population with access to clean water in the target areas of JICA projects in the previous five years (Narok Grant Aid and Non-revenue Water Project's nine sites).

G) Distribution Capacity of Vaccine

  • JICA supported the Project for the Reinforcement of Vaccine Storage in the Republic of Kenya, which developed the cold chain for distribution of vaccine through the Central Vaccine Store.
  • 45 million doses of vaccines distributed through the Central Vaccine Store in 2019.

H) Number of PhD and Master Trained by JICA

  • We compiled the number of students awarded the scholarship (African Business Education Initiative for Youth and other programs) for post-graduate program from March 2006 to March 2020.
