Hello buddies, I am Chisanga Lyoba, a research student at Kyoto University. I am set to embark on a groundbreaking study to address the pressing issue of diarrheal diseases in African peri-urban settlements under the supervision of Associate Professor Hidenori Harada. My research, titled "Pathogen Detection & Diarrhea Risk Assessment for Optimized WASH Interventions in African Peri-Urban Settlements," will focus on identifying major diarrheal pathogens, evaluating associated risks and assessing the effectiveness of WASH interventions to mitigate these risks in targeted compounds in Lusaka, Zambia because by understanding the specific pathogens causing diarrhea, researchers can help improving the health and well-being of millions of people living in these vulnerable areas. And I have already conducted studies with Mr. Takahashi (master student of Kyoto University) in Chawama compound. My research will also involve a comprehensive assessment of water quality, sanitation practices and hygiene behaviors in targeted areas and the surveyed data will be used to estimate the risk of diarrheal disease transmission and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions such as improved water access, sanitation facilities and hygiene promotion programs.

みなさん、こんにちは！今年7月から京都大学修士2年の高橋さんと一緒に、ルサカ市チャワマ地区で水質調査に携わってきたチサンガ・リョーバです。私は、9月末に訪日し、本プロジェクトのリーダーである原田先生の指導の下、アフリカの都市周縁地域における最適なWASH（水・衛生）介入のための病源体の検出と下痢リスク評価に関する博士研究に取り組む予定です。この研究は、ルサカ市の貧困地区での下痢リスクを低減させるため、下痢を引き起こす主要な病原体を特定し、それに伴うリスクを評価し、WASHの改善によるリスク低減効果を推定します。というのも、対象地である貧困地区の住民の健康と暮らしを向上させるには、下痢を引き起こす特定の病原体を知り、何が下痢リスク要因となっているかを理解することが不可欠だからです。本研究はまた、対象地の水質、トイレと排泄物の管理、そして衛生行動に関する包括的評価も行い、集められたデータは、下痢リスクの伝播予測、および、安全な水やトイレなど衛生施設へのアクセスの向上、および衛生促進キャンペーンといった介入手法の効果推定に役立てられます。
