Emergency Disaster Relief

Quick response to disasters in developing countries

Thousands of people every year are affected by natural calamities as well as man made disasters worldwide. JICA's Disaster Relief Program dispatches Japan Disaster Relief teams and provides emergency relief supplies when major disaster occur, mainly in developing areas, in response to requests received from the governments of affected countries or international agencies.

Rescue Teams, Medical Teams, Expert Teams, or Self Defense Forces(SDF) are dispatched as personnel assistance and emergency relief supplies are provided as material assistance.

Components of Disaster Relief

Rescue TeamThe main tasks of Rescue Team is to search for missing people, rescue Disaster victims, provide first aid, and move victims to safety.
Medical TeamThe tasks of the Medical Team is to diagnose or to assist in the diagnosis of victims, provide initial treatment, and if necessary they work to prevent Infection and the spread of diseases.
Experts TeamThe Expert Team, takes stopgap measures in the wake of disasters and Provides guidance advice on how to achieve recovery in the best manner.
Self Defense Force SDF can be dispatched when a large-scale disaster occurs and it deemed necessary. SDF personnel carry out emergency relief activities (rescue activities, medical activities, stopgap measures, reconstruction), transport activities using ships, aircraft, and helicopters, medical and disease prevention activities, and water supply activities using water purifiers.
