  • 15% increase in the production of paddy in the pilot sites at Dagana and Podor

PROJECT SUMMARY

The 2008 food crisis which resulted in the rise of food prices has plunged Senegal in a very difficult situation both for the government and the population. Given the strong dependence of the country on rice imports, it was urgent for Senegal to increase the national rice production, to ensure the food security and self-sufficiency in rice production. PAPRIZ is a response to this new orientation taken by Senegalese authorities.

4 main components are executed in the framework of the project:

  • Component1: establishment of rice farming with high productivity in the target irrigation schemes through the efficient use of inputs and improvement of rice cultivation techniques;
  • Component 2: establishment of appropriate mechanism of the rehabilitation, management and maintenance of pilot sites;
  • Component 3: establishment of measure to improve the financial management of producers in order to improve their credit eligibility rate;
  • Component 4: establishment of appropriate distribution channels for quality of white rice that meets the needs of Senegalese consumers.
    PAPRIZ, established in the framework of the Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD), contributes to reach the goals of National Program for Self-Sufficiency of Rice whose target is to reach rice self-sufficiency of Senegal by 2018.
