Identification of the development needs for agricultural sector ;
Coordination of support from the Government of Japan in the agricultural sector.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Official Development Assistance of Japan put a particular emphasis on a sustainable development of agriculture and food security. In Senegal, the support to the agriculture sector is one of the most important sectors of JICA's intervention.
This over 25-year-period of collaboration has allowed the development of several projects especially in the field of agriculture.
To facilitate and strengthen the relationship between the two goverments and extend the technical cooperation in the formulation of policies and national strategies dedicated to this sector, an expert technical advisor is assigned to the cabinet of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Equipment. His mission is to help the coordination of the JICA program which supports the rural economy through the promotion of sustainable rice cultivation.
Enrolled in the tripartite framework of JICA, the initiative of Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD), this Program includes two major technical cooperation projects that are being executed,

Project on Improvement of Rice Productivity for Irrigation Schemes of the Valley of Senegal (PAPRIZ);
Project on Supporting Sustainable Production of Rainfed rice.

The support activities of CARD such as the development and implementation of a National Strategy of Rice Development (SNDR) in Senegal through the National Program for Self-Sufficiency of Rice (PNAR), the process of mechanization of rice cultivation, and the process of strategy development also fall within the framework of the mission of the expert.
