OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

On the initiative of the stakeholders of fishing, the co-management of fishery ressources between the professional of artisanal fishery and the administrations concerned is established on project sites.

PROJECT SUMMARY

JICA had conducted a first study of co-management of fisheries in Senegal from 2003 to 2006. During this study, the local co-management type of « bottom-up » based on the initiative of the artisanal fishermen has been promoted through pilot projects.
Several actions in view of the development of local ressources have been carried out, we can mention among others : the increase of meshes and the reduction of the size of fishing nets as well as the reduction of the number and the use of biggest size of fish hook to mitigate the fish effort, the application of biological rest with the flooding of pots to octopus , marking and releasing baby cymbium to promote their development and the use of artificial branch to facilitate the reproduction of cuttlefish.
After a 4 year -executing project, important results have been produced, such as the awareness and the improvement skills of stakeholders on the importance of a sustainable management of halieutic ressources, the establishment and the operating of Local Councils of Artisanal Fishers (CLPA) and the reinforcement of capacity execution of the stakeholders in the implementation of management actions of halieutic ressources by the CLPA.
