Project for Capacity Building for the Restoration and the Promotion of Effective Use in the Areas of Soil Degradation (CODEVAL)

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

This project aims is to provide to the Water and Forestry Agents and local actors, the appropriate capacity to control land degradation and the promotion of their valorization, and also to implement in the field, the techniques relating to them and especially allow the DEFCCS to better handle these issues later.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Kaolack and Fatick face major problems related to the prevalence of soils having a high content of sulfuric acid, the expansion of land with low vegetation, salinization and weakening of arable land. These issues are impacting on people's lives significantly.
It is in this context that JICA under the CODEVAL project by strengthening capacity (transfer of technology and know-how) of the Water and Forestry Agents and local actors involved in sustainable land management.
The project is targeting hundreds of towns localized in four departments cited above, and twenty pilot sites (5 sites in each department).
Based on the strengthening capacity of forest Agents and the results of the initiated activities in the pilot sites, the techniques and technologies tested and developed to restore degraded land, will be popularized and disseminated by the forest service at other sites in target area 20 sites in each department, for a total of 80.
Since its inception, several activities have been carried out. This is among other:

  • Analysis of the effectiveness and limitations of control measures and techniques already applied to control land degradation and promoting their valorization;
  • The study of the improvement and development of the necessary techniques;
  • The selection of pilot sites;
  • The establishment of the business plan for each site;
  • Early implementation of training and demonstration of control measures at the pilot sites.
