In the Zanzibar Archipelago which lies off the east coast of Tanzania Mainland in the Indian Ocean, the fisheries industry is a major industry that provides a living for the region's residents. It accounts for 5.2 percent of GDP (fish production: 38,000 tons in 2021) and employs approximately one-fourth of the Archipelago's labor force.

Malindi is one of the largest fish landing sites in the coast of Zanzibar, which also receives most artisanal fishing boats coming from a wide range of fishing villages (with quite huge number of fishing boats registered in urban district). It also serves as a fish distribution hub and has a whole sale market for Zanzibar city which was estimated to have a population of about 220,000 in 2012.

However, due to the deterioration of unloading facilities stacked with rubble without modern sanitary facilities, marine products were handled far after their freshness peak. Moreover, waste produced during processing was disposed of in the sea and on the ground of the landing site, in effect causing sanitation problems, as well as productivity and distribution challenges.

Based on the above problems, the Government of Zanzibar and JICA entered into an agreement for supporting the sector by providing a Grant Aid of up to 1,353 million yen for the development of the site.

Through JICA's support, a Japanese contractor started rehabilitating the old erosion-prone Malindi Fish Landing and Marketing Facilities in July 2019. The fishing wharf and seawall of the fishing port will undergo thorough renovation, along with improvements to the nearby unloading and market facilities.

Through these measures, the project aims to create a safe, efficient work environment, improve the freshness of marine products and contribute to the stable supply of quality seafood, particularly in Zanzibar City.

In addition, the completed facilities are expected to accommodate more fishing vessels, create more jobs for people in the sector, and increase the earnings of stakeholders in the fisheries value-chains, thereby bringing out the potential of blue economy and boosting it in Zanzibar.
