The project is being implemented in Unguja Island, Zanzibar. The population of the Island is 0.63 million and is a famous tourist destination.

Most of the power facilities in Zanzibar are old as they were constructed in the 70's and 80's. Therefore the Island faces frequent power problems due to old and malfunctioning equipment. Moreover there is a plan to build another submarine cable from Tanzania Mainland to Zanzibar in 2012 and this is going to substantially increase electricity flow to Zanzibar. Therefore there is an urgent need to increase the capacity of power supply on the Island.

The project includes the rehabilitation of the largest substation on the Island (MtoniSub station), construction of two new Sub stations (Welezo and Mwanyanya) and construction of three distribution feeders. The total length of the distribution feeder is 80.8 km.

The project will benefit 53,000 households and offices which are currently receiving power and that the time of power outage will be reduced to 12 hours/year compared to 120 hours/year currently. It is also anticipated that the improved power supply will have positive impacts not only in the local economy but also in the health and education services through stable power supply to hospitals, academic institutions, hotels and factories.
