Activities in Tanzania

Tremendous efforts have been made to improve the health status in Tanzania. As a result, reduction of under-five mortality and infant mortality rates have been observed in recent years. However, there are still many challenges such as limited access to primary health care services, weak health management capacity at district level, insufficient health workforce, inadequate medical supply and lack of health infrastructure. As a result of these challenges, maternal mortality rate is still high (460/100,000 LB in 2010). Moreover the country still faces unequal access to adequate health service and clean water/sanitation.

JICA has put priority in the strengthening of health systems, particularly focusing on health administration systems at regional and district levels, human resources for health information system, 5S-Kaizen in health facilities and capacity building on HIV/AIDS control. In order to contribute to the Government of Tanzania's objectives in the sector, JICA utilizes the experiences it gained in the past cooperation projects in the sector.
