Activities in Tanzania

The Government of Tanzania is focusing on industrialization of Tanzania making efforts of improving its business environment. Tanzania's Five Year Development Plan (FYDP) III, which was launched in June 2021, emphasizes economic reform, industrial development, and the knowledge and ability to participate fully in international trade. It highlights for increased investment in science, technology and innovation as a way for the country to move from comparative advantages into competitive advantages, stimulate industrial development and become competitive in local, regional and global markets. Furthermore, it focuses on strengthening private sector capacity and deepening engagement capability that will facilitate implementation of the policy that attracts domestic and foreign investment and trade.

On the other hand, although Tanzania is one of the potential countries in East Africa for Japanese companies to start their businesses, currently there are less than 40 Japanese companies operating in Tanzania. Those operating in Kenya are more than twice this number. Most of these potential companies lack not only accurate information about Tanzania, but also good network with local people and/or companies.

JICA has increased its efforts to enhance the partnership with private companies with co-creation, rather than simply contracting projects, which align with JICA's priorities as conventional ODA, by providing the "SDGs Business Supporting Survey" program for Japanese Private Sector to implement the feasibility studies for their investment in the partner countries. It also helps partner countries match their development needs with the appropriate products and technologies provided by Japanese companies.
