Kigoma port is on the shores of Lake Tanganyika with which Tanzania neighbours such countries as Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Zambia. For this strategic location of the port, plays an important role for regional economic development beyond Tanzania through the Central Corridor to the Indian Ocean. However, it has been difficult for the port to accommodate the recent growth of passengers and cargoes due to insufficient capacity as well as old facilities some of which are more than 100 years old.

The Project for Rehabilitation of Kigoma Port is ongoing and supported by JICA under grant aid scheme. The objective of the project is to improve safety for incoming and outgoing passengers.

The project will contribute to strengthen the Central Corridor, and will provide stable transportation of people and commodities along the shores of Lake Tanganyika and beyond.

The scope of the project:

  • Rehabilitation of passenger terminal
  • Construction of new general cargo warehouse.

The direct beneficiaries of the project are people in Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Zambia.

The Project will;

  • Increase number of ships by direct berthing to passenger terminal without passing through an unstable 30-meter long barge and dangerous jetty portion between passenger ship and terminal thereby enhancing safety. Also, passenger embarkation and disembarkation time will be shortened for same reason.
  • Lead to improvement of safety and amenity due to separation of movement for both cargo and passengers.
  • Enhance passenger service and comfortability as a result of improved passenger facilities such as toilet facility, passenger waiting room, kiosk, etc.
  • Bring about efficiency of cargo handling. As passenger ships can be directly berthed at the terminal, it is possible to load and unload cargoes directly to the ships by ship's crane. There will be no unstable barge that is unsafe and time-consuming.
  • Result into safe cargo storage in the new general cargo warehouse. After the general cargo warehouse is newly constructed, safety for cargo storage and those handling works will be improved. The existing warehouse was constructed in 1927, it is badly deteriorated and unsafe.
  • Create employment for locals and enhance their capacity, it is Tanzanian workers who in collaboration with Japanese contractors and consultants for rehabilitation of Kigoma Port. The project will JICA will continue to support the self - help efforts of the Government of Tanzania in promoting the social and economic development of the Tanzanian people.
