Case study - Mfugale Flyover project

JICA supported the construction of the first Flyover in Tanzania (Mfugale Flyover) at Tazara Junction which was completed in September 2018.

Traffic congestion at one of the busiest intersections in the country has been eased greatly. Travel time at the section has been reduced dramatically. This leads to increased productivity thus boosting country's economy.

Japanese ODA Contribution for decongestion of Dar es Salaam

This construction site was well managed by Japanese contractor and consultant. This project has achieved more than 2.5 million man/hour or 2.5 years of safety record during construction, and was completed as scheduled.

At the inauguration ceremony of this project, then President of the United Republic of Tanzania, late H.E. Dr. Magufuli praised both projects' safety record and quality of the flyover bridge as it gave a big face-lift of the City of Dar es Salaam,

This flyover became a symbol of the co-operative memory and long-term friendship between Tanzania and Japan.

The flyover was officially inaugurated by former Tanzanian President the Late Dr. John P. J. Magufuli in October 2018. It consists of four lanes and a 425-metre bridge.

The construction of Mfugale Flyover factored in the need for a rapid bus transit project to Gongo la Mboto from the city centre.
