The Coast Region and Dar es Salaam Region, which includes the major metropolis of Dar es Salaam, are high-growth regions expected to continue undergoing development. However, access rate to safe water is only 23 percent of the population according to the 2002 census.

To improve such extremely poor water situation, 13 villages will each be provided with piped water supply schemes, while another seven villages will receive 22 hand pump water supply schemes. In this project, this assistance should greatly improve the standard of living in local communities by providing safe water to some 46 thousand people, and ultimately ensuring a safe water supply of 66 percent of the region by 2015.
