Water supply facilities were constructed and expanded in the Zanzibar urban areas since 1920s. The water supply facilities have now aged, and the demand for water due to the increasing population has outstripped the capacity.

The objective of this project is to provide Zanzibar's 460 thousand urban inhabitants with a safe and reliable water supply by digging 11 new wells. Six of these have already been completed as part of phase I of the project, during which phase, distribution reservoirs, pipelines and pumps were also constrcuted. Through this phase, the Stone Town area of the Zanzibar Municipality and other neighborhoods are already receiving clean, sterilized water. In phase II, five more wells will be dug, in addition to two more distribution reservoirs.
