The rates of the population which have access to safe water are 58.1% in Mwanza Region and 48% in Mara Region according to the report of Ministry of Water of December, 2007.

In this project, 182 sets of deep wells with hand pumps and one water supply plant using spring water will be built in 26 villages of Mwanza Region (2,930,000 people), and in 18 villages of Mara Region (1,360,000 people). As a result, it is expected that safe water will be supplied newly to about 46,000 people, and the water supply rate in the project areas will be improved from about 6% (2005) to 22% (2020 anticipation), and it aims at contributing to the improvement of the lives of local residents.

It is planned that the management and maintenance of built facilities will be performed by the local residents of the concerned area. However, it may at times happen that even easy repairs cannot be done by the residents themselves, or the required spare parts cannot be purchased due to the delay of payment of water charges, and these incidents may affect the functioning of the facilities. So, in this project, in addition to constructing the facilities, associations for water users will be formed and technical guidance for the management and maintenance of facilities will be provided to the local residents.
