(L) Zanzibar Urban Water Distribution Facilities Improvement Project

TypeAgreement signing dateTanzania organization
LoanNot yetZanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA)

The objective of the Project is to provide safe and stable water supply services in the Project area through development and renewal of water supply facilities, thereby improving the living environment of the area.

In order to achieve 24-hour water supply in the area, it is necessary to develop an amount of water source that is insufficient for water demand.

Currently, customers in large area of Urban West Region, which is the most populated area in Zanzibar, suffer from unsatisfactory water supply (i.e., receiving water less than 6 hours a day) due to frequent occurrence of water leakage by aged reservoirs and pipelines. It is anticipated that water demand will be expanding rapidly along with the population increase. However, ZAWA faces difficulties in raising enough revenue to update or develop water supply facilities by their own due to low collection rate of water charges. Unsatisfactory water supply service is one of the reasons, which discourage customers' intention to pay water tariffs.

Considering the above, the Project aims to realize stable water supply services in the Urban West Region in Zanzibar by replacement of aged water supply facilities and contribute to improving the collection rate of water charges through setting meters and development of customer database.
