(T) Project for the Management of Groundwater Resources in Zanzibar

TypeAgreement signing dateTanzania organization

Groundwater is the primary source of water in Unguja and Pemba, Zanzibar. A fresh groundwater lens floats above the deeper saline water and sustainable development of groundwater resources must maintain the balance of fresh water flows to prevent this saline water from intruding coning into the fresh water lens or flowing inland from the sea.

Creating a sound system to monitor, evaluate and control the extraction of fresh groundwater that supports the safe balance is a survival issue to Zanzibar. Hence, Zanzibar needs to establish institutional and technical capacity as well as mechanism to properly manage their groundwater resources.
