With a GNI per capita of US$4,420 (2011), Thailand has joined the ranks of upper-middle income countries. But there are issues to be addressed such as industrial competitiveness, an aging population, environmental and climate change measures and connectivity with neighboring countries. The priority areas of cooperation with Thailand are sustainable development of economy and coping with maturing of society, coping with common issues in ASEAN countries and promotion of cooperation towards countries outside the ASEAN region. JICA is providing support for issues in Thailand as an upper-middle income country. For example, JICA is implementing several projects for the recovery from the damage of the severe flooding of 2011, infrastructure development for enhancing competitiveness, countermeasures to climate change, environmental management in provincial level, SME promotion, and care services development for elderly people.
