Project on Mineral Resources Development Plan in Bhutan held an online stakeholder meeting.

JICA is implementing a technical cooperation " Project on Mineral Resources Development Plan in Bhutan (October 2019 - February 2021)." with the aim of contributing to effective and efficient mineral resource development in Bhutan while building capacity of the staff of Department of Geology & Mines (DGM), Ministry of Economic Affairs, through developing the Mineral Resources Development Plan (MRDP) that analyzes the development potential of mining resources together with DGM.

An online stakeholder meeting, which is related to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), was held on 5th October toward the better MRDP as one of the main achievements of this project.

Stakeholders such as DGM, the National Environment Commission Secretariat, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and National Land Commission Secretariat attended this meeting, and opinions were exchanged on considerations in the final stage of the MRDP.

The potential and problems of metallic mineral resources and industrial raw materials resources (non-metallic) were described as overview of the MRDP as well as SEA. Then, enthusiastic and active discussions took place by the stakeholders. One of comments was that descriptions on the health and livelihoods of residents should be added.

This project has been providing technical guidance and transferring from Japan under the condition that travel is constrained due to pandemic of Covid-19. The MRDP will be completed soon based on the discussion in this meeting.
