KGUMSB and JICA TCP held six workshops over the last two months

KGUMSB and JICA Technical Cooperation Project (JICA TCP) held six workshops from July to mid-August 2021, taking sufficient precautions and adequate measures against COVID-19.

1. Operational Research Workshop (13 days, July 5-17)

Training on Operational Research (OR) was provided for faculty members of KGUMSB and doctors in the teaching hospital. The training program intends to orient, build and enhance the research capacity of researchers. It undertakes the entire research process from conceptualization of research proposal to publication and dissemination of findings. The course is composed of four practical modules conducted over 8-10 months. The first two modules were covered at this time and the next workshop will be conducted in April 2021 for the remaining two modules.

In the past, this training was conducted under the initiative of the Ministry of Health, but this time KGUMSB has organized it with the cooperation of JICA TCP.

2. Capacity building workshop for IT staffs for the online education system (5 days, July 17-21)

KGUMSB and JICA TCP aim to further develop the existing online education system of the university. Currently, the online education system is only used in a limited number of training courses, but in the future, it will be used in all departments and more training courses, pedagogy, EBM/EBP, Covid-19 measures, etc. To do so, we need to further strengthen the capacity of the IT staff in the university. We invited an external lecturer and learned about the implementation and management of online education. As the next step, the staff in charge of IT will organize workshops for faculty members of each department to explore how to utilize the online education system for classes and training courses.

3. Workshop for evidence-based medicine/practice (EBM/EBP) online module (3 days, August 3-5)

A workshop was held to create a module for online education on evidence-based medicine/practice (EBM/EBP). Participating members were physicians, nurses, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, and physical therapists, and the first draft was developed taking into account the situation in their respective fields of expertise. This workshop will continue until the EBM/EBP online training materials are finalized and uploaded to the university website.

4. Workshop for Information Communication Technology (ICT) strategy for KGUMSB (4 days, August 2-5)

The Strategy is KGUMSB's five-year plan (2021-2026) for ICT. The first version was drafted in the preceding workshop in February, so this workshop was aimed to finalize and make it ready for submission to the governing council.

From now on, JICA TCP will continue to provide support to realize the five-year plan described in University ICT Strategy.

5. Workshop for the preparation of modules for the COVID 19 training course (4 days, August 10-13)

KGUMSB provide COVID19 training course in line with the situation in Bhutan (Response and management training on COVID-19). As with EBM/EBP, this training course will be provided through the online education system. Therefore, the workshop was aimed to create the modules for online implementation. The modules are not finalized at this time and some refinements are still required. It will take some more weeks to start the online course.

6. Workshop for quality management system policy/guidelines for KGUMSB (5 days, August 2-6)

JICA TCP focuses on strengthening the management capacity of KGUMSB and supports activities for this purpose. This workshop was held to prepare the first version of the University Quality Management System Policy/Guidelines. As a next step, the draft will be finalized, incorporating outside opinions, and then reviewed and approved by the University's governing council. This guideline will be a critical document for KGUMSB.

JICA TCP will continue supports for strengthening the university management capacity along the line of the guideline.
