In March 2022, the Project on Power System Master Plan 2040 was successfully completed. In this project, the Department of Hydropower and Power Systems (DHPS), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) updated the Power System Master Plan with technical cooperation from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Power System Master Plan 2040 will be the guiding document for the sustainable development of hydropower resources to provide affordable, reliable, and clean electricity to the people of the country.

Upon the request from DHPS, JICA extended the project for another two years from 2019 to 2021 to provide technical advice on several projects under construction, supported the preparation of a pre-feasibility study of the prioritized hydropower project, and conceptual designs for pumped storage power plants and a power pooling station. The cooperation also included capacity building of human resource for the energy sector.

At the wrap up meeting held on March 22, the Director of DHPS expressed his gratitude for JICA's longstanding cooperation and requested continued assistance in the power sector. JICA would like to continue the cooperation for enhancing energy security and sustainable development in Bhutan.
