On July 22, JICA President KITAOKA Shinichi held talks with Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and Sports Aziz Abdukhakimov, in Tokyo.

Their discussion touched on the talks between President Kitaoka and President Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan when he visited Japan in December 2019, and exchanged views on achievements in cooperation between Japan and Uzbekistan to date and future outlook.

Referencing the relationship of trust that has thus far been built with Uzbekistan, President Kitaoka conveyed the message that Uzbekistan is an important partner for Japan. He also mentioned the “omotenashi” hospitality he received from the people of Uzbekistan during his own travel to the country, noting the similarities between Uzbekistan and Japan, countries connected via the Silk Road, such as the value of treating guests with respect. He also stated his desire to contribute to the stability and development of Uzbekistan by strengthening the relationship between the two countries through activities such as the JICA Chair (JICA Program for Japanese Studies).

Mr. Abdukhakimov stated his gratitude for Japan’s support in the fields of tourism, education, and sports, and expressed his expectation for Japan’s provision of knowledge and technology, including inter-university cooperation, for the further development of his country.

JICA will continue to promote Uzbekistan’s economic and social advancement through multi-faceted cooperation that combines human resource development and infrastructure development.
