Emergency Assistance to the Damage Caused by Volcanic Eruption and Tsunami Disaster in the Kingdom of Tonga

The Japan International Cooperation Agency will provide emergency relief goods as below and transport these relief goods by the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Self-Defense Force Unit to the Kingdom of Tonga, in response to the damage caused by the volcanic eruption and tsunami disaster upon the request from the Government of Tonga.

1. Disaster situation
The volcanic eruption and tsunami disaster, which occurred around 13:00(local time)on 15thJanuary, has caused serious human and property damage. According to UN OCHA, the damage situation as of 19 thJanuary was as follows:
Deaths:3
Affected:around 104 thousand people
Collapsed/Damaged houses:150 houses

2. Goods supplied
A. Emergency relief goods
Water
Shovels
Wheelbarrows
Water jelly cans
Goggles
Dustproof masks
Work gloves
Hand carts
High-pressure washing machines

B. Shipping way
The goods will be transported by the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Self-Defense Force Unit.
