On May 27, JICA Special Advisor to the President (former President) KITAOKA Shinichi met with Hon. Pravind Kumar JUGNAUTH, Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius during his visit to the country.

Dr. Kitaoka introduced Japan's response to the ship-grounding of the bulk carrier MV WAKASHIO in 2020, the significance of sharing Japan's experience of modernization, and the efforts of JICA Chair (JICA Program for Japanese Studies).

In response, Prime Minister Jugnauth expressed his gratitude for Japan's prompt support during the accident, JICA Chair, and all the technical and financial cooperation to date. He also touched on the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), explaining that the environment is now ready for foreign private companies to enter Africa using Mauritius as a gateway, and expressed his hopes for increased private-sector investment from Japan.
