On August 18, 2021, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement with La Administración Nacional de Electricidad (The National Electricity Administration) in Asunción to provide a Japanese ODA loan of up to 9,294 million yen for the Project for Improving Efficiency of the National Electric Power System. This is a joint co-financing project with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) based on the cooperation framework for economic recovery and social inclusion.

The objective of the Project is to provide a stable and efficient power supply to the metropolitan area of Asunción by constructing a 500kV transmission line as well as to promote energy conservation by installing energy efficient equipment for public facilities. This will contribute to an efficient electric power system and sustainable economic development of the country. This project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 7 and 13.
