On November 16, 2021, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Benin in Cotonou, to provide grant aid of up to 3,218 million yen for the Project to Strengthen Drinking Water Supply Systems in the Departments of Couffo and Plateau.
Under this project, people’s living environment in two departments will improve through the development of water resources and the construction of water-supply facilities, including distribution pipes and water towers. It is expected that this project will increase water supply in the area, while reducing the number of waterborne diseases as well as the labor involved in water fetching. This project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 3 (Good health and well-being), 6 (Clean water and sanitation), and 13 (Climate action).
For the detailed design of this project, a grant agreement to provide aid of up to 129 million yen was signed in January 2021.
