Signing of Japanese ODA Loan Agreements with Côte d’Ivoire: Contributing to the COVID-19 crisis response, realizing a resilient health system, and strengthening transmission lines for stability of the power supply

On May 25, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed loan agreements with the Government of Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan, to provide Japanese ODA loans of up to a total of 37,028 million yen for the following two projects.
(1) COVID-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support Loan (loan amount: 15,000 million yen)
(2) Taabo-Kossou-Bouake Power Network Reinforcement Project (loan amount: 22,028 million yen)

(1) COVID-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support Loan
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the program is to realize a resilient health system through concessional financing. This will be achieved by supporting the smooth implementation of policies to strengthen the COVID-19-response capacity of the health sector, enhance economic and physical access to high-quality health services, and improve health finance. Such policies will promote the economic stabilization and development of Côte d’Ivoire. The project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 3 (Good health and well-being).

(2) Taabo-Kossou-Bouake Power Network Reinforcement Project
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the project is to increase the amount of power supplied to the central and northern areas of Côte d’Ivoire as well as to neighboring countries Mali and Burkina Faso, and to improve the standard of living and stimulate economic activity in the targeted areas. This will be accomplished by constructing and extending transmission lines, substation facilities, and distribution networks between Taabo, Kossou, and Bouaké, which are located in the central region of Côte d’Ivoire. The project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 7 (Affordable and clean energy) and 13 (Climate action).
