On June 8, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Ghana in Accra, to provide grant aid of up to 2,455 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Health Care System in the Northern Region.

In the Northern Region of Ghana, despite great efforts to improve access to health services, the under-five mortality rate, as well as the maternal and institutional maternal mortality ratio, remains high. Additionally, the Tamale central hospital, which is positioned as a regional hospital, has buildings that are more than 90 years old and are in a state of deterioration, resulting in inadequate maternal and child health services for the region.

This project aims to improve the referral system and the quality of maternal and child health services in the Northern Region by constructing new facilities and installing medical equipment, with the main goal of upgrading the functions of Tamale Central Hospital. Moreover, by installing medical equipment for maternal and child health at selected district hospitals in case transfer to top-tier emergency hospitals is not possible, the project aims to contribute to the improvement of maternal and child health and health services in Ghana as a whole. This project will therefore contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 3 (Good health and well-being).
