On February 9, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in Bishkek to provide grant aid of up to 999 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Medical Equipment in Bishkek City and Chui Oblast (region).

In the Kyrgyz Republic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases (heart attacks, strokes), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, account for 80% of all deaths, including those among young people (2019). Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital, and the surrounding Chui Oblast, accounting for more than 30% of the population, are receiving a large number of patients from other oblasts. The number of deaths per 100,000 people from cardiovascular diseases, one of the indicators of NCDs, is 377, much higher than the national average of 297 (2019). In addition, hospitals in Chui Oblast are unable to provide diagnostic and treatment services for NCDs—which should be addressed at each medical facility—due to the aging of medical equipment. As a result, patients are concentrated in the few hospitals that are well equipped. Thus, improving the quality of medical services is an urgent issue.

This project will strengthen the system for early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of NCDs by providing the related diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment to hospitals in Bishkek and the surrounding area of Chui Oblast. This is expected to improve the quality of healthcare services and strengthen social infrastructure in the Kyrgyz Republic, contributing to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 3 (Good health and well-being).
