Signing of Japanese ODA Loan Agreements with India: Contributing to India's development with the country’s first high-speed rail, and in a wide range of fields including urban, rural, and forestry

On March 29, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed loan agreements with the Government of the Republic of India in Delhi, to provide Japanese ODA loans of up to a total of 426,814 million yen for the following four projects.

(1) The Patna Metro Rail Construction Project (I) (loan amount: 98,612 million yen)
(2) The Project for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation for Climate Change Response in West Bengal (loan amount: 9,308 million yen)
(3) Rajasthan Water Sector Livelihood Improvement Project (II) (loan amount: 18,894 million yen)
Details for the projects are provided below.
(4) Project for the Construction of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (IV) (loan amount: 300,000 million yen)

Details for the projects are provided below.

(1) The Patna Metro Rail Construction Project (I)
(a)Objective and Summary
The objective of the Project is to cope with the increase of traffic demand in Patna, the capital of Bihar state, by constructing the new metro corridor 1 & 2, thereby contributing to improvement of the urban environment and development of the economy as well as mitigation of climate change through urban development focused on public transportation. The Project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 8,9,11, and13.

(2) The Project for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation for Climate Change Response in West Bengal
(a)Objective and Summary
The object of the Project is to mitigate and adapt to climate change, conserve, and restore ecosystems by ecosystem-based climate change measures, biodiversity conservation and restoration, livelihood improvement activities and institutional strengthening, thereby contributing to sustainable socio-economic development in West Bengal. The Project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 1,5,13, and 15.

(3) Rajasthan Water Sector Livelihood Improvement Project (II)
(a)Objective and Summary
The object of the Project is to enhance irrigation efficiency and agricultural productivity in the State of Rajasthan. To realize these, such measures as promotion of gender mainstreaming in agriculture, renovation of dilapidated irrigation facilities, and farm management based on market demand. These measures will contribute to improve farmers’ livelihood, as well as promotion of female participation in the social activities. It will also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 1, 2, 5, and 13.

(4) Project for the Construction of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (IV)
(a)Objective and Summary
This project aims to develop a high-frequency transportation system by constructing a high-speed rail along an approximately 500-km section between Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The project will improve the efficiency of the transportation network in the region and contribute to the broad economic development of the target area, thereby also contributing to the achievement of SDGs Goals 8, 9,11 and 13
