On March 30, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement with the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in La Paz to provide a Japanese ODA loan of up to 15,000 million yen for the COVID-19 Response Emergency Support Loan.

The loan will provide financial support to Bolivia, where the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly severe, bolstering the government’s efforts in implementing policy and institutional improvements that will allow the continuation and strengthening of public services in the health and medical sector. It will also strengthen those policies and institutions that protect the vulnerable population, which form the basis of public services’ ability to function. This loan will therefore contribute to the socio-economic development and stability of Bolivia, and to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 1 (No poverty), 2 (Zero hunger), and 3 (Good health and well-being).

This loan is co-financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Bolivia under the co-financing framework CORE (Cooperation for Economic Recovery and Social Inclusion). It is also expected to enhance cooperative effects in the areas of social protection and health through cooperation with the IDB.
