JICA is continuing public welfare assistance in Afghanistan. The assistance is focused in three areas: agriculture and rural development; basic human needs including education, health and medical care; and infrastructure improvement. In this video, we speak with Japanese specialists to introduce a project in Jalalabad for improving farm productivity, primarily of rice, a project to fight tuberculosis in Kabul, and a road maintenance and management project. We also look at future development and possibilities for the Kabul metropolitan area.

The Second International Mekong Bridge, a 2050 meter bridge connecting Laos and Thailand, was completed in 2006 with support from JICA. Economic activity has remarkably progressed since its opening, making it an integral bridge that expands the link between Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar through the East-West Economic Corridor. As logistics speed has become a vital factor in economic development in Asia, the bridge has been garnering attention for its benefits of shifting sea transportation into land shipping. The program documents Japan's initiative towards connecting two countries and its economic impact within Asia. The program was broadcasted in NHK World.

Goal

Jericho is a city in Palestine on the West Bank of the Jordan River where JICA is developing a regional development program to maintain peace in the Middle East. Tsuyoshi Kitazawa, an official supporter of JICA, visited Palestine with the idea of using soccer to bring to the Palestinian people, who live in harsh conditions, dreams and hope–if only on a small scale. We traveled to Jerusalem, the Dead Sea and Jericho with Kitazawa to report on the conditions in Palestine and what happened during his soccer events.

In this video, JICA’s efforts at peace building are described from two different angles: the bottom-up or community approach, and the top-down or economic development approach. For the bottom-up approach, we introduce JICA efforts in Palestine that are more closely integrated with the community such as the mother and child health project, a project to improve waste management capacity, and a soccer school opened in Jericho by Tsuyoshi Kitazawa, an official supporter of JICA.

An introduction to some Japanese ODA loan projects being conducted in Egypt. One of those is the Grand Egypt Museum Construction Project. More than a century has passed since the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, home to a large number of historical Egyptian assets, opened in 1902, and the museum faces the problems of aging facilities and inadequate storage space. To solve these problems, Japan has begun to provide assistance toward constructing a new museum, and technical cooperation for restoring and storing artifacts and creating a database.

The Dream: A Trans-Strait Rail Line Connecting Asia and Europe -The Bosphorus Rail Tube Crossing Project-

The Turkish city of Istanbul has a history spanning more than 2,500 years. This town is divided by the straight the Bosphorous, some 30 kilometers long, into an Asian section and a European section. A project to connect the two sides of the Bosphorus by rail is being conducted with a Japanese ODA loan. In this video, we speak with some Japanese consultants who are working locally on the dream project to build a trans-strait rail line.

Cerrado: Land for Innovation

Brazil is sustained by what is thought of as a grand breadbasket, spreading throughout the inland savanna called the Cerrado. The area had long been barren and abandoned. However, as a result of continuous efforts and cooperation with Japan for a quarter-century, the Cerrado has gradually been transformed into rich greenery. This agricultural revolution has helped in boosting Brazil as the world's leading crop exporter. Farmers from places such as Mozambique, a country with untouched expanses of land, aspire to emulate its agricultural development. With comments from farmers and JICA staff members, the program documents the development of the Cerrado and explores the role of Japanese assistance. The program was broadcasted in NHK World.

KAIZEN: Joining Hands, Changing Lives

KAIZEN is the tool which was the driving power of Japan's business management, developed during its high economic growth period. Since KAIZEN does not need to use any expensive equipment or investment in order to raise company workers motivation, teamwork and improvement of their morale, many countries around the world has been taking in. JICA is sending out KAIZEN experts from Japan to Ethiopia, teaching them the technique of KAIZEN through on-the-job training. The program features on two Japanese experts, working in Ethiopia.
