The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire is a core country in the region, accounting for approximately 40% of the economic scale of the eight member countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and plays an important role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). With a solid real GDP growth rate of 6.3% (provisional) in 2025, it has maintained its position as a driving force in the regional economy.
However, due to the political turmoil and civil war that persisted from the late 1990s, the country's governance functions and capacity to provide social services remain challenging. Poverty, regional disparities, and youth employment issues have worsened, and in the northern region, the activities of armed groups and the influx of refugees along the border with Burkina Faso have further destabilized society.
In light of these challenges, JICA Côte d'Ivoire is working to support regional stability and sustainable economic and social development by incorporating perspectives such as digital transformation (DX) and climate change measures, while collaborating with international organizations and Japanese companies to pursue innovative solutions to these issues.
Furthermore, since 2023, the JICA Côte d'Ivoire Office has functioned as a regional office overseeing Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Togo, strengthening support mechanisms for the stability and development of the entire West African region.
