On June 23, 2025, a handover ceremony was held for medical equipment provided under the “the Project for the Improvement of Medical Equipment at Tertiary Hospitals in Djibouti City.” Through this project, four university hospitals in Djibouti City—Pelletier University Hospital, Balbala University Hospital, Dar El Hanan University Hospital, and Chakib Saad Omar University Hospital—will receive essential medical equipment.
The ceremony was attended by H.E.M. Keiichi Hara, former Ambassador of Japan to Djibouti; H.E.M. Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh, Minister of Health; Ms. Kotohi Inoue, Chief Representative of JICA Djibouti Office; and senior officials from the Ministry of Health.
This project aims to enhance medical services at tertiary-level hospitals※ by focusing on emergency care, obstetric care, and diagnostic services, thereby improving access to quality healthcare for the Djiboutian population.
The newly provided equipment will help upgrade the technical and medical capabilities of these tertiary hospitals, creating an environment where patients can receive high-quality and reliable medical care. This donation aims to strengthen the technical and medical capacities of tertiary hospitals in order to ensure better access to quality healthcare for the Djiboutian population.
In addition to equipment provision, the project will also provide technical assistance over a period of approximately three years to strengthen the capacity of targeted hospitals for maintenance and sustainable management of medical equipment.
※ Tertiary-level hospitals are the highest-level medical facilities in Djibouti, located in the capital city. They provide advanced healthcare services, including complex surgeries and intensive care.
