Signing for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Next Stage of Sabo Technical Center between JICA and Ministry of Public Work and Housing Indonesia

Bali, (22 May 2024), The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Ministry of Public work and Housing (MPWH) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Sabo Technical Centre (STC). The MoU signing took place during the 10^th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali.

The document was signed by Takehiro Yasui, Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia Office and Bob Arthur Lombogia, Director General for Water Resources of MPWH. It was also attended and witnessed by the Senior Vice President of JICA, Kawamura Kenichi, and the Minister of MPWH Mochamad Basuki Hadimuljono.

Since its establishment with the assistant of Japan, STC are currently taking role on data analysis, technical guidance and engineer training programs as well as technology development of Sabo for sediment control and disaster risk reduction in Indonesia. On the last June 2023, the honorable Majesty Emperor of Japan also visited STC.

Minister Basuki showed the intention to strengthen STC and expanding its scope to other developgin countries to play a key role to contribute to the Centre of Excellence for Water and Climate in the field of sediment-related disaster risk management.

Minister Basuki said, “STC is milestone to change technology of Sabo in Indonesia. Since its establishment, the STC has trained around 350 Sabo engineers. Currently because of the climate change, revitalization of STC is crucial.”

This MOU agrees on our future cooperation for STC including assistant on formulation of roadmap, upgrading of equipments and assistance for training program to realize the vision.

Indonesia and Japan have long history on Sabo cooperation since the first dispatch of JICA Expert in 1970s. Now, JICA will continue supporting MPWH’s endeavour to further intensify it’s function and expand it’s knowledge to other countries.
